How to identify a tree or plant by its leaf

Botanists narrow down a species using a few leaf traits. Check these before you photograph, and you'll get a faster, more confident ID:

Shape
Oval, heart, lobed (like maple/oak), needle, or strap-like?
Margin
Smooth edges, toothed/serrated, or deeply cut?
Venation
Veins branching (net-like) or running parallel?
Arrangement
Single (simple) leaf, or many leaflets on one stalk (compound)?
Lobes
Count the points — a 3-, 5-, or 7-lobed leaf narrows trees fast.
Surface
Glossy, fuzzy, waxy, or dull? Note color top vs. underside.

Lay the leaf flat on a plain background, fill the frame, and shoot in even light. If the leaf is compound, capture the whole stalk so the AI can count the leaflets. Our identifier reads shape, margin, and venation to name the plant and flag whether it's toxic to people or pets.
