About Snap Plant

Snap Plant is a free plant identification tool and plant care resource. Upload a photo of any plant and get an instant identification — species name, family, origin — plus a detailed care guide specific to that plant.

What We Help You With

Most people come to Snap Plant with one of a few questions:

  • "What plant is this?" — Our AI identifies plants from a single photo, covering thousands of houseplants, garden plants, trees, wildflowers, succulents, and more.
  • "Why is my plant dying?" — We cover the most common houseplant problems: overwatering vs. underwatering, pest damage, nutrient deficiency, light problems.
  • "Is this plant safe for my pet?" — Our pet-safe plant guides and toxicity sections in every plant profile make it easy to check before you bring a new plant home.
  • "How do I care for this plant?" — Every species in our database comes with a care guide covering light, water, soil, humidity, and common problems.

Our Plant Care Content

Our plant care guides are researched from established horticultural sources including university extension programs, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), and ASPCA toxicity databases. Every species guide goes through the same fact-checking process:

  1. Species identification and family classification verified against current botanical taxonomy
  2. Care requirements cross-referenced across multiple horticultural sources
  3. Toxicity data checked against ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center records
  4. Seasonal care variations noted for users in different climate zones

We focus on practical accuracy over volume. We'd rather have 25 carefully researched plant profiles than 500 thin pages that don't actually help you.

Our Focus: Houseplants and Garden Plants

We focus specifically on houseplants and common garden plants — the plants most people actually grow at home. Our most-used resources include:

Our plant directory covers popular species including Pothos, Monstera, Snake Plant, Peace Lily, Fiddle Leaf Fig, and more.

How the Plant Identifier Works

Our plant identification uses AI image recognition trained on a large dataset of plant species. Upload a clear photo of the plant's leaves, flowers, or stem — the more distinct the feature, the better. The identifier returns a species match with confidence level, along with the care guide for that species.

Best practices for accurate identification:

  • Photograph a single leaf or distinct feature rather than the whole plant from a distance
  • Use natural light when possible — flash can wash out texture and color
  • Include both the upper and lower leaf surface if possible (many species are identified by leaf underside characteristics)
  • For flowering plants, include the flower in the photo — it dramatically narrows identification
