You repotted your plant to help it, and now it looks worse than before. The leaves are drooping, maybe a couple have gone yellow, and the whole plant has that deflated, sulking look. The first instinct is panic: did I just kill it?

Almost certainly not. What you're seeing is transplant shock (also called repotting shock), and it happens to some degree every time a plant is moved to a new pot. It looks alarming, but in the vast majority of cases it's temporary, and the single most important thing you can do about it is less, not more. The plants that die after repotting usually die from the rescue attempts, not the repotting.

Why Is My Plant Drooping After Repotting?

The answer lives underground. A plant's root system isn't just the thick roots you can see when you pull it out of the pot. The real work of water absorption happens through root hairs: microscopic, single-cell extensions that grow off the fine feeder roots. They are so small and so fragile that they're nearly impossible to see, and they do the majority of the plant's water uptake.

No matter how gently you repot, you destroy a large share of those root hairs. They snap when soil is loosened, tear when roots are teased apart, and shear off when the root ball shifts in the new pot. The plant is suddenly running its full canopy of leaves on a badly reduced water-supply system.

The leaves keep losing water through transpiration at the normal rate, but the roots can't replace it fast enough. The result is exactly what you'd expect: drooping, wilting, curling, and a generally limp plant, even though the soil is moist. That last part is the key insight. The plant isn't thirsty because the soil is dry. It's thirsty because its plumbing is under repair.

The good news: root hairs regrow quickly. For most healthy houseplants, the water-uptake system is substantially rebuilt within one to two weeks, and the plant perks back up on its own.

The one-sentence version: Repotting temporarily breaks the plant's ability to absorb water. Drooping, mild wilting, and a yellow leaf or two for 1-2 weeks is normal. Water once, keep the light the same, don't fertilize, and wait.

The Transplant Shock Recovery Protocol

Recovery is mostly about restraint. Here is the full protocol, in order.

Water thoroughly once, right after repotting. Water until it runs freely from the drainage holes. This settles fresh soil around the roots and collapses air pockets, which is essential, because roots sitting in an air gap can't absorb anything. After this one deep watering, stop. Let the pot settle and only water again when the top inch or two of soil has dried. Damaged roots in constantly wet soil rot; that's how mild shock becomes a dead plant. Keep the plant in the SAME light conditions it had before. This is the most commonly broken rule. People repot a struggling plant and then "help" it further by moving it to a brighter window. Brighter light increases transpiration, which is exactly the demand a shocked plant can't meet. Put it back in the same spot, with the same light, it had before repotting. If it was genuinely in bad light, fix that later, after recovery. One change at a time.

Do NOT fertilize for 4-6 weeks. Fertilizer is salt, and salt draws water out of tissue. Applying it to freshly damaged roots burns them and pulls moisture in the wrong direction, deepening the shock. Fresh potting mix already contains enough nutrition to carry the plant through recovery. Wait until you see clear new growth before resuming your normal feeding routine, and even then start at half strength.

Do not repot again to "fix" it. When a freshly repotted plant droops, some owners conclude the new pot or soil must be the problem and repot a second time. This doubles the root damage and resets the recovery clock at the worst possible moment. Unless you discover an outright emergency (no drainage hole, soil that stays soggy for a week, visible rot), the plant stays in its pot.

Reduce demand where you can, gently. Keep the plant away from heating vents, air conditioners, and drafty windows, all of which speed up water loss. For tropicals, slightly higher humidity (a nearby humidifier or pebble tray) eases the load on the roots. Some growers trim off badly wilted or damaged leaves to reduce transpiration; that's fine in moderation, but don't strip a plant of healthy foliage.

Then leave it alone. No daily prodding, no rotating, no moving it around the house, no tugging on the stem to "check the roots." Every disturbance interferes with the fine new root growth you're waiting on. Check the soil moisture every few days and otherwise let it be.
The most common fatal mistake: a drooping plant in moist soil gets watered again, and again, because "drooping means thirsty." After repotting it usually doesn't. Always check the soil with your finger before watering a recovering plant. If it's damp an inch down, the drooping is shock, not thirst, and more water makes it worse.

Plant Turning Yellow After Repotting: When It's Fine and When It Isn't

Yellowing right after a repot deserves its own word, because it scares people more than drooping does.

A plant with a damaged root system deliberately cuts its losses. It withdraws nutrients from its oldest, least productive leaves and lets them yellow and drop, which reduces the total leaf area demanding water. So one, two, even three yellow leaves at the bottom of the plant in the two weeks after repotting is the plant managing its own recovery. Remove them once they pull away easily and move on.

Yellowing is a genuine warning sign when it behaves differently: spreading fast, moving upward into newer growth, appearing alongside soft stems or a sour soil smell, or affecting many leaves at once. That pattern points to overwatering or root rot rather than ordinary shock. Dying After Repotting: The Real Warning Signs

Give a shocked plant time, but not unlimited benefit of the doubt. Investigate immediately if you see any of these:

  • Mushy stems. Firm stems that droop are shock. Soft, water-soaked, collapsing stems are rot, and rot doesn't wait for a two-week recovery window.
  • Spreading black. Black or dark brown patches advancing along stems, up from the soil line, or across leaves indicate rot or fungal infection moving through damaged tissue.
  • A sour, swampy smell from the pot. Healthy soil smells earthy. Decaying roots smell sour.
  • No improvement after 3 weeks. By three weeks, a plant recovering from ordinary shock should look visibly better, or at minimum have stopped declining. Steady deterioration past that point means something else is wrong.
If you see rot signs, act now: Slide the plant out of its pot and inspect the roots. Healthy roots are firm and white to tan. Rotted roots are brown or black, mushy, and may slough off when touched. Trim all rotted roots back to healthy tissue with clean scissors, discard the wet soil, and repot in fresh, barely damp mix in a pot with drainage. How to Repot With Less Shock Next Time

Some root-hair damage is unavoidable, but the difference between a plant that sulks for three days and one that struggles for a month comes down to technique.

Size up only 1-2 inches

Move to a pot just 1-2 inches wider in diameter than the current one. A dramatically oversized pot holds a large volume of soil that no roots are drinking from, so it stays wet for ages, and wet soil around a recovering root system is a rot recipe. Small, incremental upgrades keep the soil-to-root ratio healthy.

Keep the root ball intact

Unless the plant is severely root-bound, resist the urge to shake off the old soil and untangle every root. Slide the root ball out, set it in the new pot, and backfill around it. The less you disturb, the more root hairs survive, and the milder the shock. If the plant is root-bound (roots circling densely around the outside of the ball, growing out of the drainage holes), gently loosen the outer layer and tease apart the circling roots; the short-term damage is worth it because circling roots will eventually strangle the plant.

Repot in spring

Spring and early summer are when houseplants are entering active growth, which means root regeneration is fastest and recovery is shortest. A plant repotted in the dark, cool months of late fall or winter is trying to rebuild roots while semi-dormant, and shock can drag on for weeks. Repot in spring when you have the choice; save emergency repots (rot, broken pots, badly compacted soil) for whenever they're needed.

A few smaller habits that help

  • Water the plant a day or two before repotting. A hydrated plant handles root disturbance far better than a drought-stressed one, and moist root balls hold together instead of crumbling.
  • Repot in the evening or on a cloudy day. Cooler, dimmer conditions mean lower transpiration during the most vulnerable hours.
  • Use fresh mix appropriate for the plant (fast-draining for succulents and cacti, chunky aroid mix for monsteras and philodendrons, standard peat or coir mix for most tropicals).
  • Firm the soil gently, don't compact it. You want soil in contact with the roots without crushing out all the air.

How Long Until It Looks Normal Again?

Rough expectations for a plant handled reasonably well:

  • Days 1-3: The low point. Drooping is most dramatic, and the plant may look worse each day. This is normal.
  • Days 4-10: Stabilization. The decline stops, leaves begin regaining firmness, and the plant starts holding itself up again.
  • Weeks 2-3: Visible recovery. Turgid leaves, normal posture, maybe a shed lower leaf or two along the way.
  • Weeks 3-6: New growth resumes. Once you see it, recovery is complete and you can restart fertilizing at half strength.

Sensitive or heavily root-disturbed plants (fiddle-leaf figs, calatheas, anything that was root-pruned) may run a week or two behind this schedule. As long as the trend is flat-then-improving rather than steadily worsening, you're fine.
