You repotted your plant to help it, and now it looks worse than before. The leaves are drooping, maybe a couple have gone yellow, and the whole plant has that deflated, sulking look. The first instinct is panic: did I just kill it?
Almost certainly not. What you're seeing is transplant shock (also called repotting shock), and it happens to some degree every time a plant is moved to a new pot. It looks alarming, but in the vast majority of cases it's temporary, and the single most important thing you can do about it is less, not more. The plants that die after repotting usually die from the rescue attempts, not the repotting.

The answer lives underground. A plant's root system isn't just the thick roots you can see when you pull it out of the pot. The real work of water absorption happens through root hairs: microscopic, single-cell extensions that grow off the fine feeder roots. They are so small and so fragile that they're nearly impossible to see, and they do the majority of the plant's water uptake.
No matter how gently you repot, you destroy a large share of those root hairs. They snap when soil is loosened, tear when roots are teased apart, and shear off when the root ball shifts in the new pot. The plant is suddenly running its full canopy of leaves on a badly reduced water-supply system.
The leaves keep losing water through transpiration at the normal rate, but the roots can't replace it fast enough. The result is exactly what you'd expect: drooping, wilting, curling, and a generally limp plant, even though the soil is moist. That last part is the key insight. The plant isn't thirsty because the soil is dry. It's thirsty because its plumbing is under repair.
The good news: root hairs regrow quickly. For most healthy houseplants, the water-uptake system is substantially rebuilt within one to two weeks, and the plant perks back up on its own.

Yellowing right after a repot deserves its own word, because it scares people more than drooping does.
A plant with a damaged root system deliberately cuts its losses. It withdraws nutrients from its oldest, least productive leaves and lets them yellow and drop, which reduces the total leaf area demanding water. So one, two, even three yellow leaves at the bottom of the plant in the two weeks after repotting is the plant managing its own recovery. Remove them once they pull away easily and move on.
Yellowing is a genuine warning sign when it behaves differently: spreading fast, moving upward into newer growth, appearing alongside soft stems or a sour soil smell, or affecting many leaves at once. That pattern points to overwatering or root rot rather than ordinary shock. Give a shocked plant time, but not unlimited benefit of the doubt. Investigate immediately if you see any of these:
Some root-hair damage is unavoidable, but the difference between a plant that sulks for three days and one that struggles for a month comes down to technique.
Move to a pot just 1-2 inches wider in diameter than the current one. A dramatically oversized pot holds a large volume of soil that no roots are drinking from, so it stays wet for ages, and wet soil around a recovering root system is a rot recipe. Small, incremental upgrades keep the soil-to-root ratio healthy.
Unless the plant is severely root-bound, resist the urge to shake off the old soil and untangle every root. Slide the root ball out, set it in the new pot, and backfill around it. The less you disturb, the more root hairs survive, and the milder the shock. If the plant is root-bound (roots circling densely around the outside of the ball, growing out of the drainage holes), gently loosen the outer layer and tease apart the circling roots; the short-term damage is worth it because circling roots will eventually strangle the plant.
Spring and early summer are when houseplants are entering active growth, which means root regeneration is fastest and recovery is shortest. A plant repotted in the dark, cool months of late fall or winter is trying to rebuild roots while semi-dormant, and shock can drag on for weeks. Repot in spring when you have the choice; save emergency repots (rot, broken pots, badly compacted soil) for whenever they're needed.
