A leaf changing color is your plant's only way of telling you something. The trick is that the same color can mean completely different things depending on which leaves are affected and what pattern the discoloration takes. Yellow bottom leaves on an otherwise happy pothos can be perfectly normal. Yellow leaves all over a plant in soggy soil is an emergency.
This guide works like a diagnosis chart. Start with the quick table below, match your leaf color and pattern, then jump to the section for that color. Every cause listed here has a specific fix, and most of them are simple once you know what you're looking at.

Yellow is the most common leaf complaint by a wide margin, and it has one dominant cause and a handful of runners-up. Work through these in order.
Overwatering is the number one killer of houseplants, and yellow lower leaves are its calling card. When soil stays wet, roots can't get oxygen. Struggling roots can't move nutrients, so the oldest leaves at the bottom of the plant yellow first, often turning soft rather than crispy. The soil may smell musty, and the plant might droop even though it's "well watered."
How to confirm: Stick a finger 2 inches into the soil. If it's wet down there and you watered more than a few days ago, and the yellowing started at the bottom of the plant, you're overwatering. The fix: Stop watering until the top 1 to 2 inches are fully dry. Make sure the pot has a drainage hole and never leave the pot sitting in a saucer of runoff. Plants shed their oldest leaves as they grow. If a single bottom leaf slowly yellows over a couple of weeks and drops while the rest of the plant looks great and keeps producing new growth, that's the plant's normal housekeeping. Dracaenas, palms, and peace lilies do this constantly. No action needed beyond removing the spent leaf.
The line between normal and not: Normal shed is slow, affects only the lowest and oldest leaves, and happens one or two leaves at a time. It becomes a symptom when several leaves yellow at once, when young or middle leaves are affected, or when yellowing comes with wet soil, drooping, or mushy stems.
If the whole plant is fading to a uniform pale yellow-green rather than individual leaves going fully yellow, the plant is either short on nitrogen or short on light. Both starve the plant of chlorophyll, which is what makes leaves green. Nitrogen deficiency typically shows on older leaves first because the plant relocates nitrogen to new growth; a light-starved plant also tends to get leggy, stretching toward the nearest window.
The fix: If the plant hasn't been fertilized in six months or more and light is decent, feed with a balanced houseplant fertilizer at half the label strength, monthly during the growing season. If the plant sits far from a window or in a dim corner, move it closer to bright indirect light first and give it three or four weeks before reaching for fertilizer. Fertilizing a plant that's actually light-starved just burns the roots.
This one deserves its own section because it panics so many people unnecessarily. Yellowing in the first one to two weeks after repotting is transplant stress, and it's normal. No matter how gentle you are, repotting tears fine root hairs, and the plant temporarily loses some of its ability to take up water. It responds by sacrificing a few leaves to lower demand while the roots re-establish.
What to do (and not do) while it recovers:
Brown splits into two very different problems depending on where it appears: on the tips and edges, or in spots on the leaf surface.
Dry, papery brown that starts at the tip and works inward is an environmental issue, not a disease. The three usual suspects: low humidity (extremely common in winter when heating drops indoor air below 30% RH), fluoride or chlorine in tap water (dracaenas, spider plants, prayer plants, and calatheas are especially sensitive, and the browning often has a faint yellow halo), and underwatering, either watering too rarely or watering so lightly that the bottom of the root ball never gets wet.
The fix: Raise humidity with a pebble tray, a humidifier, or by grouping plants together. For fluoride-sensitive species, switch to filtered, distilled, or rainwater, or at minimum let tap water sit out overnight (this off-gasses chlorine, though not fluoride or chloramine). If the soil pulls away from the pot edges or the pot feels feather-light, you're underwatering: water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom, every time. The brown tips themselves won't turn green again; trim them with clean scissors, following the leaf's natural shape and leaving a hair of brown so you don't cut into live tissue.
Brown patches in the middle of the leaf that feel soft or water-soaked are a different animal: fungal leaf spot or overwatering damage. Fungal spots often have a defined edge, sometimes a yellow ring around a brown or dark center, and they spread from leaf to leaf, especially where leaves stay wet or air is stagnant.
The fix: Remove affected leaves with clean scissors and throw them out (don't compost them). Stop misting, keep water off the foliage when you water, and improve airflow around the plant. If soil is soggy, treat the overwatering as described above. For a spreading fungal problem, a copper-based fungicide or diluted neem spray on remaining foliage helps stop new spots.
Leaves that turn yellow first and then brown are usually just showing you the full life of one problem. In natural leaf shed, an old leaf yellows, browns, dries, and drops; that sequence on a single old leaf is fine. In advanced overwatering, yellow lower leaves progress to brown mushy patches as the tissue dies; that sequence across multiple leaves with wet soil means act now. Pattern and soil moisture, not the colors themselves, tell you which one you have.
Black is the color to take most seriously. There are two main causes, and both are urgent.
Prolonged overwatering eventually kills roots outright, and opportunistic fungi finish the job. Above the soil you'll see blackening that starts on lower stems or at leaf bases, mushy dark tissue, and often a sour or swampy smell from the pot. Below the soil, healthy roots are firm and white to tan; rotted roots are brown-black, slimy, and fall apart when touched.
The fix, step by step:
If leaves went dark and limp within a day or two, think about temperature before anything else. A tropical plant touching a freezing window pane, sitting in the path of a winter draft, or left outside on a cold night will blacken fast, and the damage often looks water-soaked at first before turning black and papery. Cold damage tends to hit the leaves closest to the cold source.
The fix: Move the plant somewhere reliably warm (most tropical houseplants want to stay above 55°F). Blackened leaves will not recover; trim them off once you're sure the tissue is dead. Then wait. If the stems and roots stayed healthy, the plant will push new growth in a few weeks.
Some plants are naturally purple (tradescantia, some calatheas, purple heart) and some show purple leaf undersides by design. But when a normally green plant develops a purple or reddish-purple cast, especially on leaf undersides and stems, there are two linked causes.
Phosphorus-starved plants build up sugars in their leaves that convert to purple anthocyanin pigments. The twist is that cold is the usual trigger: when roots sit below roughly 50°F, they can't absorb phosphorus efficiently even when the soil contains plenty. That's why tomato seedlings set out too early famously turn purple, and the same thing happens to houseplants kept near cold windowsills in winter.
The fix: Rule out cold first. Move the plant away from cold glass, drafts, and exterior doors, and keep it above 55°F. If temperatures are clearly fine and the purple tint persists for weeks, feed with a balanced fertilizer that includes phosphorus (the middle number on the label) at half strength. Don't reach for a high-phosphorus "bloom booster"; a normal balanced feed is enough, and excess phosphorus causes its own problems.
It's worth repeating, because it saves a lot of unnecessary repotting and fussing: a healthy plant sheds old leaves. Signs the yellowing you're seeing is just normal aging:
Some plants are heavier shedders than others. Palms and dracaenas retire lower fronds constantly, and a fast-growing pothos will drop old leaves along mature vines. Trim yellow leaves at the base whenever you like; the plant has already pulled the useful nutrients out of them, and removing them keeps energy going to new growth.
The most common cause is overwatering, which shows up as soft yellow lower leaves and wet soil. Other frequent causes: natural aging (one or two old bottom leaves is normal), too little light, nitrogen deficiency (uniform pale yellow across the plant), and transplant stress after repotting. Check the soil moisture first; that one test rules the top cause in or out.
Brown crispy tips come from low humidity, fluoride or chlorine in tap water (dracaenas and spider plants are especially sensitive), or underwatering. Raise humidity, use filtered water for sensitive species, and water thoroughly until it drains. Trim the dead tips; they won't turn green again.
Yellowing for one to two weeks after repotting is transplant stress and is normal. Keep light and temperature stable, water only when the top inch of soil dries, and skip fertilizer for 4 to 6 weeks. If yellowing continues past two weeks, check whether the fresh mix is staying too wet.
Black usually means root rot (blackening from the base, mushy tissue, sour-smelling soil) or frost damage (sudden blackening after cold exposure). Root rot needs an immediate unpot-trim-repot rescue. Frost-damaged leaves are gone; trim them, keep the plant warm, and wait for regrowth.
A purple or reddish tint on a normally green plant points to phosphorus deficiency, cold exposure, or both, since cold roots can't absorb phosphorus well. Move the plant away from cold windows and drafts first. If it stays purple in warm conditions, feed with a balanced fertilizer at half strength.
Sometimes. One or two of the oldest bottom leaves slowly yellowing and dropping while the plant keeps growing is normal leaf shed. It's a problem when multiple leaves yellow at once, newer leaves are affected, or the yellowing comes with soggy soil, drooping, or mushy stems.
